Painting - another way to keep a diary.

Pot with Indigenous Art by A.L Barlin

The pot in the picture above means a lot to me - it is a pot my father painted. My dad spent a lot of time in Darwin and New Guinea during WW2 and during his quiet times painted and sketched. This is the only piece of his art that I have and it is really precious to me. My dad's pot reflects the time he spent at Katherine Gorge. He told many stories of the min min lights and his time with the local people there. This piece of artwork reminds me of those stories. His words of advice when I wanted to start painting was; 'well do it... don't go to art class, just get some paints and paint'. So I did, and in the process have had lots of fun.

There is a quote by Picasso that says 'painting is just another way of keeping a diary'. I know that the artwork that I have painted reflects my journeys in recent years. I think buying artwork is another way of keeping a diary as well - a piece can really speak to our inner selves as we look at it. Even though it may mean something totally different the buyer than what the artist intended. My artwork shows pictures of homes and Hawaiian women, of prayers and food - I am always fascinated when I listen to what others see in it and how it shows me a glimmer of their inner life.

Art is a wonderful means of expressing yourself, and is a way of journalling too. At frangipani house we offer sessions using art to express yourself in a counselling or life coaching session. You don't need to have experience drawing or painting or doing a collage - you just need the desire to create and express yourself.

Friends - The Chitty Chat eBook

Our experiences with one another formed a patchwork of memories to keep our souls warm and feeling loved

While living in Port Macquarie I was so blessed to have the most wonderful group of friends. Every so often we would get together in one house or another and drink tea and make yummy things to eat and chitty chat. We had such a diverse range of conversations from Argentine Tango to Alcoholics Anonymous to how to Pray or how to create an artwork with your life.

We decided to write an ebook on our tea parties and share with you some of the things we talk about. Writing the ebook together was the most wonderful exercise... it brought us even deeper into our understanding of each other. My beautiful friends are coming up to visit me soon... can't wait for more tea parties and chitty chat.

Bead Angel

While my neice was visiting me last week, we took time to make an angel. We had a lovely time sitting and beading. I just found the angel today sitting on the bookcase and it reminded me of our time together.

Many years ago when I was in Samoa, I drove past some Samoan women in their fales making leis and singing together. I longed to join in with them. But in those days I didn't have the courage to go and ask. It was a longing I brought back with me to Australia and I decided to create a similar gathering with other women in my own life whenever I could.

We have a lot to learn from island culture in our western world.

Stone With Quartz Line

After practising Hot Stone Massage for many years, I learned to appreciate, seemingly ordinary stones, and now stones have never seemed the same. Stones now fascinate me. Stones I wouldn't have given a second glance, now stop me in my tracks. Now I take time to look and may be take a picture, and stand and wonder at them.

I saw the stone in the picture above on the beach at Byron Bay and took this picture. Now that I know how long it takes stones to form, I am amazed to think that just at this point in time it and I are in the same place. You may know how long stones take to form, if not I can tell you that they have been around for a very very long time. Traditions of the Hawaiians and the American Indians say that the stones may be our ancestors. They say that our bodies turn back to the earth once we have passed on and that the dust from the ancestors mix with the earth and become parts of stones like this one.

Does that make you think differently about stones? It made me think differently. As I look at stones now, I think of stories such as this...

How did the quartz get into the place it is right now in the stone?
Do you ever stop and wonder at the things in nature that may seem ordinary?

Happy New Year - Hau`oli Makahiki Hou

Well it's 2008 - what a lovely rainy New Year we have here. My neice and I have been contemplating goals for 2008. We found some old goals from last year and as I have been working with needs based counselling for a while we decided to set our goals with the human needs as a guide. Humans all have common needs, however, where we differ is how important the individual needs are to each of us.
Here are some ideas...

Security
Food/Water/Clean Air/ Place to live
Variety - Excitement
Love - Relationships - Belonging
Spirituality
Wisdom and Growth
Contribution

What is most important to you at this stage of your life?
What types of goals would you write for each on the list above?

At Frangipani House we can help you clarify and define what it is you would like to create in your life Click Here
