On a recent visit to the Arts Centre at The Gold Coast, my sweetie and I discovered a gem in the middle of the park at the back of the centre. The Peace Pavillion. I don't know if the same feeling of peace will be felt by looking at these pictures, that I felt while wandering around there, but I hope so.

The Peace Pavillion... is dedicated to each person who spends a few moments of the day discovering inner peace. You are joining people from all over the world who celebrate peace as a an active part of their lives.

How important are beliefs and expectations in determining what happens to us in life?

They may be more important than you think.

Have you ever noticed that people who expect the best in life usually seem to get it? And have you noticed that the reverse also seems to be true? Do you think it happens that way due to coincidence or luck? Or is something else going on?

Here is what I think. One of the basic principles of the concepts I teach is that we move toward and become like that which we think about, and we behave not in accordance with the truth but with the truth as we perceive and believe it to be. So when you expect the best from yourself and others, you behave in ways that almost guarantee you are going to get it.

The same is true when you expect trouble. You set yourself up for trouble in countless little, and not so little, ways and sure enough, trouble shows up at your door. What do you expect for yourself? Do you expect to do the things you dream about or do you expect obstacles, opposition and eventual disappointment?

What do you expect from your kids, your spouse, and your co-workers? Do you expect excellence, integrity and respect? Or do you have to keep after them all the time to keep them from messing things up? Why not try expecting the best? It's a habit that can be learned and it's probably the best habit you can get your children into, too.

If you consistently and lovingly give them a better, much more positive expectation, they are far more likely to go out and make it happen.

In the last few months, the world has seen its share of natural disasters, from the earthquakes in New Zealand and Japan to the tornados and river flooding here in the United States. In each instance, the aftermath has been almost unbearable to watch. What happened was outside human control. Nothing we can do - at least at this point in time - can prevent natural disasters like these. All we can do is be as prepared as possible for the unknown.

For most cities, counties, states and nations, we prepare for the practical response. Here in Seattle, where we sit in the Pacific Ocean's "Rim of Fire," we prepare for earthquakes, severe weather and flooding. Seattle's "3 Days, 3 Ways" program helps us prepare to take care of ourselves - to survive - for three days.

And while the practical approach takes care of the body's need to survive, we also need to take care of how our minds approach coping with disaster. Rebounding from disaster takes a conscious effort to control our self-talk in order to remain positive. Looking beyond ourselves, by helping others, is a great assist in aiding our own positive self-talk. Making the effort to visualize what our worlds will look like, once the current situation is fixed, provides a path to follow. And reinforcing that vision with positive affirmations goes a long way towards avoiding the pitfalls of a downward spiral.

And one more thing: Let others help you, as you help others. The sense of a community working together to solve a problem is a powerful thing. We are stronger together than we are alone, no matter what the obstacle.

Don't you love it when an unexpected treasure comes your way? For me books are among my greatest treasures. Rita Golden Gelman is one author who has recently arrived in my world through her book Tales of a Female Nomad. I was shopping in the Salvos the other day, one of the places I find my book treasures, when this book seemed to jump into my view. I love autobiographies and tales of a person's life, so I quickly placed it in my take home pile.

So far with Rita's writing, I have visited Israel, Indonesia, Mexico - places I wouldn't normally think of travelling to. I am treasuring the last quarter of the book that is left to read, I pat it gently as I put it down on my bedside table, reassured that our journey together is not yet done. I am already wondering where I'll discover more of her work and the sequel - Female Nomad and Friends.

Decluttering our Frangipani House

Well I am a very happy girl today, I finally got around to decluttering our junk cupboard. Do you have one of those, you know where all those interesting bits of mail seem to gather, the things you need to get around to, things that need to go back to the shop etc? Ours also contained keys that I have no idea what to, broken bead key rings that I mean to get around to repairing, glow balls that change colour, a personal recipe book from my uncle's mother written in the 1890's that I want to type up and share with the family, numerous RSL art union tickets (as in the home pictured above - one day I hope they call me to tell me I've won), seed packets, need I go on? I decided the New Year was a great time to get to and sort out those little areas of my life that haven't quite made it into the order that the rest of the house is finding. Little pockets of stagnation - time to go.

On Organize Your Life - Organize Your Home it is suggested that we should have 3-4 declutters a year. Just prior to Christmas the electric walker was donated to charity, we had good intentions when a friend was giving it away and thought yes, just what we need, we'll walk when it's raining - we'll put it under the deck and go down and walk - no we didn't. So eventually it just got dusty with all the building work we have been doing and I thought it best to give it to someone who could use it.

So today I am off to the office, and decluttering there, I have that many CD's with information storage on them, I have to work out what to do there yet.

A couple of days ago I placed a link to Cheryl Richardson's site, after reading one of her newsletters in my email. Then yesterday, I was in The Salvos second hand store browsing through the book section, and there in front of me was one of her books on Grace - hmmm I thought, hang on I was just talking about Cheryl in my blog... so I bought the book and last night as I was reading it, she mentions exactly these types of happenings, one thing leading to another, and being directed by Grace. Have you ever had things like that happen to you? I am sure you have, perhaps you call it a different name - coincidence, focus?

Anyway - in the book Cheryl mentions a website called My Inner World I've just been visiting there - what a wonderful site. It is so uplifting and informative and just delightful - it made my day.

I've just finished teaching our Movers & Shakers workshop in Toronto and wanted to send a brief newsletter that shared a simple, yet powerful message.

Last week I had dinner with good friends, some of who are dealing with difficult life situations. During our conversation, one friend going through a tough divorce said, "I have this handwritten note in my wallet that says 'You're the best uncle in the world!' It came from my six-year-old niece who wrote it while visiting last year. There are times when it literally gets me through the day."

Upon hearing this, another friend shared, "Ever since finding out that my dad is seriously ill and may not be long for this world, every day is heartbreaking. Sometimes a smile from a stranger is the life preserver I need to prevent me from drowning in the pain."

Tiny gestures. Unexpected moments of connection. Simple messages that pierce the heart. These are the things that often touch us in profound ways - ways the gift-giver may never realize.

On this anniversary of 9/11, I still remember feeling deeply loved by a woman on a train who held my gaze as I cried during a minute of silence honoring those who lost their lives. Feeling embarrassed, yet unable to contain my feelings, her look said, "Don't worry. Let them flow. I'm right here with you." She never broke my gaze until the period of silence was complete. And I'll never forget her.

Something that seems so inconsequential may literally save someone's emotional life. How simple. How lovely. How easy to forget. Please take this week's challenge to remember...

It is Suicide Prevention day today. Did you know that we are losing 6 people a day to suicide? The rate is higher than our death rate to car accidents. As many as 150 people each day try to take their lives. We need to talk about this, and we need to know more about it, to help one another.

After a successful launch in 2003, World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is now held every year on 10 September around the world. On this day, numerous events, conferences, campaigns and local activities call to public attention one of the world’s largest causes of premature and unnecessary death – suicide.

The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), calls upon governments, government agencies, NGOs, international and national associations, local communities, clinicians, researchers and volunteers to be involved in the organisation of WSPD activities.

It is often asked, how can we best connect with each other in a world that appears so disconnected? We strongly believe that if our communities work together, through sharing information, expertise and time, we can do a great deal to help those who are in need, and vulnerable to suicide.

We believe that through a combined effort at an international and local level, a difference to the lives of many will be made. The aim of these activities is to promote increased awareness about the problem of suicide and the many ways in which we can work to reduce suicide rates and the incidence of suicidal behaviours.

Signs of someone considering suicide:
Friends are often the first ones to know if a person is threatening suicide, more so than Dr's or health professionals. Just listening to a friend can be of so much support and help them get help. Signs can include; change in behaviour - not mixing like they used to staying at home, not joining in, or the opposite - acting aggressively and fighting a lot, difficulty sleeping, or sleeping a lot, mentioning thoughts of suicide, talking about death, suggesting that things would be better off without them, feeling depressed, sad, changes in weight, feeling like no one cares, giving away possessions.

A friend who called me was talking about her life and an affair she had been having with my ex, and as she was about to finish the conversation, said to me on the phone: "you wouldn't bother coming around here if you knew what I had done". That was all that was said and then she hung up. I quickly got into the car, and I went around to her place, she had taken a bottle of sleeping tablets, and was unconscious on the lounge. Her baby in it's bedroom, drugged as well. I am so thankful that I went there that day. I called for an ambulance straight away and they were able to save her life.

Monday: It's fun to cook for Kevin. Today I made angel food cake. The recipe said beat 12 eggs separately. The neighbours were nice enough to loan me extra bowls.

Tuesday: Kevin wanted fruit salad for supper. The recipe said serve without dressing. So I didn't dress. What a surprise when Kevin brought a friend home for supper.

Wednesday: A good day for rice. The recipe said wash thoroughly before steaming the rice. It seemed kind of silly but I took a bath anyway. I can't say it improved the rice any.

Thursday: Today Kevin asked for salad again. I tried a new recipe. It said prepare ingredients, lay on a bed of lettuce one hour before serving. Kevin asked me why I was rolling around in the garden.

Friday: I found an easy recipe for cookies. It said put the ingredients in a bowl and beat it. There must have been something wrong with this recipe. When I got back, everything was the same as when I left it.

Saturday: Kevin did the shopping today and brought home a chicken. He asked me to dress it for Sunday. For some reason Kevin keeps counting to ten.

Sunday: Kev's folks came to dinner. I wanted to serve roast, but all I had was hamburger. Suddenly I had a flash of genius. I put the hamburger in the oven and set the controls for roast. It still came out hamburger,
much to my disappointment.

GOOD NIGHT DEAR DIARY. This has been a very exciting week. I am eager for tomorrow to come so I can try out a new recipe on Kevin. If I can talk him into buying a bigger oven, I would like to surprise him with chocolate moose.

I love it when out of the blue, you just happen to find yourself in the right place at the right time. I was visiting Walcha for the golden oldies Rugby Union weekend, and as my hubby and I went to dinner, we happened across the opening night for Barbara McKay's Sands of Time exhibition. The Walcha Gallery is a beautiful space to display art, and the gallery owner Carley is very welcoming.

While we were there, I discovered that I am totally in love with Andreas Buisman's carvings. I think I may have to go back and buy one next time we are up that way. Andreas is a world renowned rock sculptor.

After a conversation with a friend last night, I was left chewing over a comment she had made about whether you are a Christian or not. She said, that according to study on Holiness and Sanctity that she had just undertaken, you are not a Christian if you don't go to church.

I felt a quite unsettled, and sad, after the comment, so this morning when it was still bothering me, I meditated on the comment for a while, and decided to go to the source and asked God, 'was that comment I had heard, the truth?' This is the answer that came to me - after a while.

Good grief, I just saw a piece of my own discarded art ceramic in an Antique Shop. ECCCH. An Antique Shop. I know I'm growing older by the day but hey, an antique shop! And they had a lot of money on it - so this is a memo to myself...

This particular Antique Shop seems to have a few funny little coincidences for me. A friend gave me a candle holder years ago for a birthday present, and he could only afford to buy one. I wanted to buy another to match it for a table setting. I had never seen them anywhere, and then one night I had a dream that I was talking to my Aunty Harlein who passed away many years ago. In the dream, she told me that I could find it in the Antique Shop.

A few days later I was driving past the shop, and low and behold, it was in their window.

This Antique Shop would make a great film set, I imagine that you could disappear into another dimension in there. It's one of those places where you just wouldn't be surprised if a goblin jumped out in front of you.

The Australian Dance Festival has some exciting news! We are making a World Record Attempt in order to raise funds for Father Chris Riley's Youth Off The Streets!! The Difference between Men and Women

Let’s say a guy named William is attracted to a woman named Julie. He asks her out to a movie; she accepts; they have a pretty good time. A few nights later he asked her out to dinner, and again they enjoy themselves. They continue to see each other regularly and after awhile neither one is seeing anybody else. And then, one evening when they’re driving home, a thought occurs to Julie and without really thinking, she says out loud: “Do you realize that as of tonight, we’ve been seeing each other exactly for six months?”

And then there is silence in the car.

To Julie, it seems like a very loud silence. She thinks to herself: “Geez, I wonder if it bothers him that I said that. Maybe he’s been feeling confined by our relationship; maybe he thinks I’m trying to push into some kind of commitment that he doesn’t want, or isn’t sure of it.

And William is thinking: Gosh, six months.

And Julie is thinking: But hey, I’m not sure I want this kind of relationship either. Sometimes I wish I had a little more space so I’d have time to think about whether I really want to us to keep going the way we are, moving steadily toward…I mean, where are we going? Are we just going to keep seeing each other at this level of intimacy? Are we heading toward marriage? Toward children? Do I really know this person?

And William is thinking: …so that means it was… let’s see… February when we started going out, which was right after I had the car at the dealer’s which means…lemme check the odometer…whoa! I am overdue for an oil change here.

And Julie is thinking: He’s upset. I can see it on his face. Maybe I ‘m reading this completely wrong. Maybe he wants more from our relationship, more intimacy, more commitment, maybe he has sensed-even before I sense it-that I was feeling some reservations. Yes, I bet that’s it. That’s why he’s so reluctant to say anything about his own feelings. He’s afraid of being rejected.

And William is thinking: And I’m gonna have them look at the transmission again. I don’t care what those morons say, it’s still not shifting right. And they better not try to blame it on the cold weather this time. What cold weather? It’s 87 degrees out, and this thing is shifting like a garbage truck, and I paid those incompetent thieves $600.

And Julie is thinking: He’s angry. And I don’t blame him. I’d be angry, too. I feel so guilty, putting him through this, but I can’t help the way I feel. I’m just not sure.

And William is thinking: They’ll probably say it’s only a 90-day warranty…scumballs.

And Julie is thinking: Maybe I’m just too idealistic, waiting for a knight to come riding up on his white horse, when I’m sitting next to a perfectly good person, a person I enjoy being with, a person I truly do care about, a person who seems truly to care about me. A person who is in pain because of my self-centered, schoolgirl romantic fantasy.

And William is thinking: Warranty? They want a warranty? I’ll give them a warranty. I’ll take their warranty and ….

“William,” Julie says out loud.

“What?” says William, startled.

“Please don’t torture yourself like this,” says Julie, her eyes beginning to brim with tears. “Maybe I should never have… Oh God, I feel so…” as she begins to sob.

“What?” says William.

“I am such a fool,” Julie sobs. “I mean, I know there’s no knight. I really know that. It’s silly. There’s no knight, and there’s no horse.”

“There’s no horse?” says William, wondering what she means.

“You think I’m a fool don’t you? Julie says.

“No!” says William, glad to finally know the correct answer.

“It’s just that… it’s that I… I need some time,” Julie says.

(There is a 15-second pause while William, thinking as fast as he can, tries to come up with a safe response. Finally, he comes up with one that he thinks might work.) “Yes,” he says.

(Julie, deeply moved, touches his hand.) “Oh William, do you really feel that way?” she says.

“What way?” says William.

“That way about time,” says Julie.

“Oh,” says William,. “Yes.”

(Julie turns to face him and gazes deeply into his eyes, causing him to become very nervous about what she might say next, especially if it involves a white horse. At last she speaks.) “Thank you, William,” she says.

Then, he takes her home and she lies on her bed, a conflicted, tortured soul and weeps until dawn whereas when William gets back to his place, he opens a bag of Doritos, turns on the TV and immediately becomes deeply involved in a rerun of a tennis match. A tiny voice in the far recesses of his mind tells him that something major was going on back there in the car but he is pretty sure there is no way he would ever understand what so he figures he is better off if he doesn’t even think about it.

The next day Julie will call her closest friend, or perhaps two of them, and they will talk about this situation for six straight hours in painstaking detail. They will analyze everything she said and everything he said, going over it time and time again, exploring every word, and possible ramification. They will continue to discuss this subject, off and on, for weeks and maybe even months never reaching any definite conclusions, but never getting bored with it either.

Meanwhile, William, while playing racquetball one day with a mutual friend of his and Julie’s, will pause just before serving, frown, and say: “Norm, did Julie ever own a horse?”

If I had gone online to see what the reviews were prior to travelling, I might have come across this article from The Blue Mountains Gazette on The Tourism Chief's fury at The Fairmont Resort... or even The Sydney Morning Herald's report More than a little bit Fawlty or even anyone of a lot of customer review sites on The Fairmont Resort... such as Trip Advisor but ahhh... I didn't. And herein lies the lesson readers.

So we arrived at The Fairmont Resort gosh it looked nice driving up to it. And I have to say it is in an absolutely gorgeous spot. HOWEVER, that was the end of the fantasy weekend. I thought I had booked my hubby and I into a gorgeous resort. Silly me. From booking.com I saw some gorgeous photos of a deluxe room, so like the unaware book buyer who buys a book by it's cover, I booked a room going on the pictures on the site. I went into the http://www.fairmontresort.com.au/ site to see if the rooms were the same, and sure enough here is a lovely picture of a deluxe room.

Sadly I have to report not the rooms we were given. I was absolutely livid. I think I was spitting chips to put it mildly over the dusty, dirty, stained, disgusting room we were given. My room on my booking slip from http://www.booking.com/ showed me a deluxe room with King Bed and room for extra people to stay even. Not that I was interested in others staying with me, but when we checked into the room, to find that 2 single beds had been shoved together, and dust all over the place, water stained lights and pubic hairs in the bath I knew I was in trouble. We even had a flashing light over our bed when the lights were turned out... a smoke alarm that had been installed directly over the top of the bed. Try to sleep with that little sucker working busily over you.

After much whining and complaining we were moved. To a superior room... one that had a pigeon infestation outside our window. The picture above shows some of the bird poop. A nice addition to a room don't you think? Picture this, sunrise, the sound of a bird cooing outside, lovely hey? Now picture another bird or so joining in the cooing... But now picture a LOT of birds cooing outside your window, now picture rats scrambling on the roof as well, then add more pigeons, now loud and starting to squabble with one another, then add some more scratching and scurring sounds.... not so great now... and so now we are well and truly awake

saying to one another...'what the _ _ _ _?'

So the moral to this story is... prior to travel, do yourself a favour, Google reviews on the place you want to go to, and for your wellbeing and health's sake, Google the reports from the local Tourism before you go to stay somewhere. If I had taken the time to review the reports on The Fairmont Leura, I would have been forwarned, and not gone.

I give them a ten out of ten died off, brown, decaying, wrinkled frangipani rating.

The Power of Observation

A lecturer teaching medicine was tutoring a class on observation. He took out a jar of yellow-colored liquid. "This", he explained, "is urine. To be a doctor, you have to be observant to color, smell, sight, and taste."

After saying this, he dipped his finger into the jar and put it into his mouth. His class watched on in amazement, most, in disgust. But being the good students that they were, the jar was passed, and one by one, they dipped one finger into the jar and then put it into their mouth.

After the last student was done, the lecturer shook his head: "If any of you had been observant, you would have noticed that I put my second finger into the jar and my third finger into my mouth."
